Android Mail-App Option “accept all certificates”

Enable this option tells the Mail-App to accept any certificate (needed by SSL/TLS), even those, which are not issued to the IMAP/POP3&SMTP server. Find below an example based on the Email server of speen.it:

A “normal” lookup (domain -> IP)

alex@amara ~ $ nslookup mx.speen.it
Server:        1**.***.***.***
Address:    1**.***.***.***#53
 
Non-authoritative answer:
Name:    mx.speen.it
Address: 85.13.137.106

A “reverse” lookup (IP -> domain)

alex@amara ~ $ nslookup 85.13.137.106
Server:        1**.***.***.***
Address:    1**.***.***.***#53
 
Non-authoritative answer:
106.137.13.85.in-addr.arpa    name = dd16424.kasserver.com.

This means what? The Email server can be reached by 85.13.137.106. If a reverse lookup is performed the IP address will be translated into another hostname (speen.it is not dd16424.kasserver.com).

Just imagine speen.it as an alias for dd16424.kasserver.com. speen.it is hosted on this server.

This is the explanation for this option. The TLS – certificate is issued to the host, not to the alias. The Mail-App can’t find a valid certificate for speen.it and won’t finish the set-up.
